10 Common Dryer Vent Code Violations Inspectors Flag Most Often

Home inspectors, mechanical inspectors, and fire marshals see the same dryer vent problems repeatedly. These ten violations account for the vast majority of dryer vent write-ups on inspection reports — and every one of them is straightforward to fix once you know what you're looking for.

Violation #1: Prohibited Flexible Foil Accordion Duct

The shiny corrugated foil duct sold in hardware stores next to compliant options is the single most commonly found prohibited material in residential dryer vent systems. It is explicitly banned by IRC Section 504.2 because its corrugated interior traps lint on every ridge, it collapses under negative pressure, and it degrades at dryer exhaust temperatures. Despite being prohibited, it is still manufactured, sold, and installed every day.

How to identify it: Silver, accordion-style flexible duct with visible wire coils beneath a foil coating. Pronounced corrugated ridges on the exterior and interior. Compresses and extends like a spring.

The fix: Replace the entire run with smooth-wall rigid galvanized steel or aluminum duct. Violation #2: Exceeding the 35-Foot Equivalent Length Limit

IRC Section 504.6.1 limits total equivalent duct length to 35 feet. The trap: "equivalent" means physical duct length plus deductions for elbows (each 90° = 5 ft equivalent; each 45° = 2.5 ft). A run with three 90° elbows and 22 feet of physical duct has an equivalent length of 37 feet — over the limit, even though the physical measurement might seem fine. This violation often isn't discovered until a home inspection during resale.

The fix: Reconfigure the run to reduce elbows (replacing 90° fittings with 45° saves 2.5 feet per conversion), find a more direct path to an exterior wall, or — if manufacturer-authorized — install a listed booster fan. Violation #3: Screened Termination Cap

IRC Section 504.4 explicitly prohibits screens on dryer vent termination caps. No exceptions, no workarounds. A screened cap — whether it's a wire cage, a mesh insert, or a louvered cap with added mesh — will accumulate lint and eventually block the exhaust path completely. Blocked exhaust is the direct mechanism behind most dryer duct fires.

How to identify it: Look at the exterior cap from outside while the dryer is not running. Any visible mesh, screen, or cage behind the louver damper is prohibited.

Violation #4: Duct Terminating Into an Attic, Crawlspace, or Wall Cavity

This is among the most dangerous violations because it is completely hidden. A dryer vent terminating into an enclosed space — rather than to the exterior — deposits lint and moisture directly into the building structure. Lint accumulation in an attic or crawlspace is a severe fire hazard; moisture causes mold and structural damage. This situation most often occurs when the original installer took a shortcut, when duct transitions have separated inside walls over time, or in conversions where the original exterior termination was disturbed.

How to identify it: Confirm the exterior termination cap is present and accessible. During a duct cleaning, the professional should be able to push a camera or brush from the dryer to the cap without losing continuity. If there's no cap, or the cap doesn't correspond to the duct path, investigate further.

Violation #5: Sheet-Metal Screws Inside the Duct Airstream

Sheet-metal screws are commonly used to join duct sections during installation — they're fast, widely available, and work well for HVAC applications. The problem in dryer venting: any screw tip protruding inside the duct catches lint. Over time, a small lint snag becomes a full obstruction. IRC 504.3 addresses this by prohibiting penetrations inside the duct airstream. Joints must be secured with metallic foil tape externally, or with the slip-fit design of the duct fittings themselves.

The fix: If screws are already installed and the duct is otherwise sound, they cannot be removed without pulling apart the duct sections. The practical remediation is duct replacement. During future installation or replacement, use only metallic foil tape for joint sealing — never screws inside the duct.

Violation #6: Dryer Vent Combined With Another Exhaust System

IRC 504.1 is explicit: the dryer exhaust duct must be independent. It cannot be combined with a bathroom exhaust fan, a kitchen range hood, or any other mechanical exhaust. Yet this violation appears occasionally in older homes where a shortcut was taken — typically combining the dryer duct with a bathroom fan because both ran to the same exterior wall. The problem: bathroom fan cycles deposit moisture into the duct between dryer uses, creating conditions for mold and lint adhesion. Dryer exhaust at high temperatures creates fire risk in ductwork not rated for dryer service.

The fix: Separate the systems. The dryer gets its own dedicated 4-inch duct run to its own termination cap. The other exhaust system gets its own path. This typically requires opening the wall or ceiling where they were combined.

Violation #7: Duct Sag / Inadequate Support

IRC 504.3 requires dryer vent duct to be supported at intervals of no more than 4 feet. A sagging duct creates a low point — a pocket where lint and condensate accumulate, just like a P-trap. How to identify it: In visible duct runs (unfinished basements, utility rooms), visually check for any section that hangs between supports. A properly supported duct runs straight and level (or pitched slightly toward the exterior) between brackets or hangers spaced no more than 4 feet apart.

Violation #8: Plastic or Vinyl Duct of Any Type

White plastic or gray vinyl duct — often sold as "dryer duct" — is prohibited by IRC 504.2. These materials melt and burn at temperatures that dryer exhaust can reach during normal operation. A lint fire inside vinyl duct is a structure fire. This material appears in older installations and in budget DIY jobs where the homeowner bought the cheapest available option without checking the code.

The fix: Complete replacement with rigid metallic duct. There is no repair option — plastic/vinyl duct is a complete replacement job.

Violation #9: Excessive Flex Duct Used for the Primary Run

Semi-rigid aluminum flex duct is permitted only as a transition section from the dryer to the wall stub-out — typically 4–8 feet maximum. Using it for the entire duct run, or for long sections beyond the transition, violates the spirit and intent of IRC 504 even where the material itself is listed. Flex duct — even the listed semi-rigid type — has higher airflow resistance than smooth rigid duct, cannot be cleaned as effectively, and is more vulnerable to kinking or crushing over time.

The fix: Replace the primary run with smooth-wall rigid duct. Keep flex duct to the transition section only, and keep that transition as short as practical — 4–6 feet is typical.

Violation #10: Missing or Non-Functional Backdraft Damper

The termination cap must incorporate a backdraft damper — a gravity-operated or spring-loaded flap that closes when the dryer is not running. Without a functioning damper, pests can enter the duct (bird nests are a documented fire hazard in dryer ducts), cold outside air flows backward in winter (increasing drying time and condensation risk), and for gas dryers, backdraft conditions have an open pathway. A damper that has been physically removed, has a broken hinge, or has been held open by a wedge or debris is non-compliant.

How to identify it: With the dryer off, look at the exterior cap. The damper flap should be fully closed. If you can see daylight through the cap with the dryer off, the damper is open or missing.
