IRC Section 504 — Plain-Language Guide for Homeowners
The International Residential Code Section 504 (and its mechanical code counterpart, IMC 504) governs clothes dryer exhaust systems in the United States. Most of the relevant rules fit on two pages. Here they are, without the legal language.
504.1 — General: What This Section Covers
Section 504 applies to the exhaust duct system that removes moist, lint-laden air from a clothes dryer to the exterior of the building. It covers duct material, diameter, length, joints, support, and termination. It does not cover the dryer's internal components or its electrical/gas connections — those are covered elsewhere.
Key principle: The exhaust system must be independent. Dryer exhaust cannot be combined with any other exhaust system — not bathroom fans, not kitchen exhaust, not any other mechanical exhaust. Each dryer gets its own dedicated duct all the way to the exterior.
504.2 — Duct Material Requirements
The code is explicit about what materials are permitted and what are not.
Required minimum diameter: 4 inches.
Prohibited: Plastic, vinyl, or any non-metallic duct. Flexible foil duct (corrugated foil-over-wire type). Any duct not listed for clothes dryer exhaust service.
The foil accordion duct sold at hardware stores for low-cost dryer connections is one of the most commonly installed prohibited materials. It is not code-compliant for any portion of a dryer vent run. The semi-rigid aluminum flex duct (smooth interior, able to hold its shape) is permitted as a transition section but not for the primary run. See Prohibited Duct Materials.
504.3 — Duct Installation: Joints and Support
Joints between duct sections must be made with metallic foil tape or mechanical fasteners. Standard duct tape (the cloth-backed gray type) is not rated for dryer exhaust temperatures and degrades over time — it is not code-compliant. Sheet metal screws may be used at duct connections outside the airstream, but screws inside the duct are prohibited because they catch lint.
Ducts must be supported at intervals of not more than 4 feet to prevent sagging. A sagging duct creates a low point where lint and condensate accumulate — the same problem as a kinked flex duct.
504.4 — Exhaust Termination
All dryer exhaust must terminate to the exterior of the building. Terminating into an attic, crawlspace, wall cavity, or garage is explicitly prohibited — moisture and lint accumulation in enclosed spaces creates both fire and mold hazards.
Must not: Have a screen of any type. Terminate under a floor or into an enclosed space. Terminate less than 10 feet from a gas meter vent (check local requirements).

504.5 — Makeup Air
Clothes dryers exhaust a significant volume of air — a typical electric dryer moves 150–200 cubic feet per minute. This air must be replaced from somewhere. In tight, well-sealed modern homes, a running dryer can create slight negative pressure that affects other combustion appliances (gas water heaters, furnaces). Section 504.5 requires that makeup air provisions comply with the building's overall mechanical ventilation design. In practice, this means ensuring the laundry space has adequate supply air — typically satisfied by a gap under the laundry room door or an undercut of at least 1 inch.
504.6 — Duct Length

- Maximum equivalent length: 35 feet
- Each 90° elbow subtracts 5 feet from the allowable straight run
- Each 45° elbow subtracts 2.5 feet
- Flex transition duct counts toward total equivalent length
- Manufacturer's maximum duct length governs when more restrictive than the code
504.6.1 — Single Dryer Installation
The 35-foot rule applies to each individual dryer installation. A dryer vent serving a single residential dryer must not exceed 35 equivalent feet regardless of whether a booster fan is present (without the fan manufacturer's specifications permitting a longer run — see 504.6.2).
504.6.2 — Booster Fans

504.7 — Multiple Dryer Installations
Commercial laundry facilities with multiple dryers have different provisions — higher exhaust volumes, booster fan requirements, and duct sizing rules. These provisions apply to multi-family buildings with shared laundry rooms. Individual residential dryers sharing a common exhaust duct are not permitted under the residential code provisions. Each dryer in a multi-unit residential building must have its own dedicated exhaust duct.

IRC 504 FAQ

Yes. Most US jurisdictions have adopted the 2018 or 2021 IRC, but some still use older editions or have local amendments. The core dryer vent provisions (35-foot limit, prohibited materials, no screens) have been consistent across recent code editions, but always verify with your local building department before beginning work.
It depends on your jurisdiction and the scope of work. Replacing a duct run in an existing home often does not require a permit. Adding a new penetration through a wall, especially a masonry or fire-rated wall, often does. When in doubt, call your local building department and ask — a 5-minute phone call is faster than a stop-work order.
