Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry Clothes — Complete Diagnosis

A dryer that used to finish in 45 minutes and now takes 70–90 is telling you something specific. In the vast majority of cases — roughly 80–85% based on appliance repair industry data — the cause is vent-related. This guide walks through every vent-related cause in order from easiest to diagnose to most complex, with confirmation steps and fixes for each.

Important distinction: "Takes too long" from day one (new installation) vs. "used to be fine, now takes longer" are different problems. New-installation slow drying almost always points to an installation error. Gradual slowdown over weeks or months points to blockage accumulation. Sudden slowdown points to a cap failure, disconnect, or a bird nest. This guide covers all three patterns.

The 5-Minute Check Before Anything Else

Before diagnosing the duct system, confirm the simple things that are often missed:

  • Is the lint trap clean? A clogged lint trap reduces airflow before air even reaches the duct. Pull it out and check — if it's matted with lint, clean it and run a test load before assuming the duct is the problem.
  • Is the load size reasonable? An overloaded drum can't tumble clothes efficiently. The drum should be roughly 3/4 full — clothes should be able to tumble freely.
  • Is the moisture sensor clean? If your dryer has a moisture sensor (two metal strips inside the drum), mineral deposits from hard water or dryer sheet residue can coat the sensor, causing it to read "dry" when clothes are not. Clean the strips with a cotton ball dipped in isopropyl alcohol.

If all three check out and the dryer is still slow, the vent is the next place to look.

Cause 1: Blocked or Seized Exterior Cap

How to confirm: Run the dryer and step outside to the termination cap. The cap flap should be fully open and you should feel strong, warm, clearly moist airflow. Hold your hand 6 inches from the cap — you should feel clear pressure. If the cap is barely open, or airflow feels weak or absent, the cap is the restriction.

Why it happens: Lint accumulation on the cap interior eventually builds up enough to prevent the damper flap from opening fully. In winter, moisture on the damper flap can freeze it closed. Cause 2: Kinked or Crushed Flex Transition Duct

How to confirm: Pull the dryer away from the wall and visually inspect the flexible transition duct (the section from the dryer's exhaust outlet to the wall stub). Check for any kinks, sharp bends, or sections that are compressed. A kink in the transition can reduce airflow as severely as a full blockage further in the duct.

Why it happens: Dryers are pushed too close to the wall during installation, compressing the flex duct behind them. Semi-rigid flex can also develop a permanent kink if it was bent sharply during installation. Over time, vibration during operation can cause the transition to shift and develop a kink that wasn't initially present.

The fix: Straighten the transition or replace it if it cannot be straightened without creasing. The transition from dryer outlet to wall stub should have a gentle, open curve — never a sharp kink. The dryer should be positioned at least 4–6 inches from the wall to give the flex duct room to make a gradual turn rather than a sharp one. Replace with listed semi-rigid aluminum flex (not foil accordion type) if the existing transition is too short or has been permanently kinked.

Cause 3: Lint Blockage in the Duct Run

How to confirm: If the cap check (Cause 1) and flex transition check (Cause 2) both look fine but the cap airflow is still weak, the blockage is somewhere in the main duct run. You can attempt to confirm by disconnecting the transition duct from the wall stub-out and running the dryer briefly — if strong airflow comes from the dryer outlet but not from the wall stub, the blockage is in the duct. If the dryer outlet itself has weak flow, the problem is inside the appliance.

Why it happens: Regular use without adequate cleaning is the primary cause. Contributing factors include prohibited duct materials (foil accordion type traps lint aggressively), duct runs exceeding the 35-foot equivalent limit, sagging duct sections that create low points for lint accumulation, and pets or heavy textile use that increases lint volume.

The fix: Full duct cleaning. For accessible runs under 25 feet, a consumer rod-and-brush kit (see DIY Cleaning Guide) is effective. For longer runs, multiple bends, or compacted lint, hire a professional with rotary brush equipment. After cleaning, verify the cap opens fully and airflow is strong before returning the dryer to service.

Cause 4: Over-Limit Duct Run (New or Worsening Installation)

How to confirm: Use the Equivalent Length Calculator. Measure the physical duct length and count all elbows. If the equivalent length exceeds 35 feet (or your dryer manufacturer's specified maximum, whichever is lower), the run is the fundamental problem — cleaning will provide temporary relief but the structural issue remains.

Why it happens: Installation was made without regard for equivalent length limits. Elbows were added for convenience. A second washer/dryer was added to a run designed for one, extending the path. Or the home was purchased with a pre-existing violation.

Cause 5: Duct Disconnected Inside a Wall or Ceiling

How to confirm: This is the hardest to diagnose from the outside because a disconnected duct section in a finished wall looks exactly like a severe blockage to the naked eye — weak cap airflow, long drying times, humidity in the laundry room. The distinguishing symptoms: pronounced humidity in the room or spaces adjacent to the duct path; a musty smell that doesn't resolve after cleaning; moisture staining on walls or ceilings near the duct path. Why it happens: Duct joints were not properly sealed (foil tape only — no screws holding the joint). Thermal cycling (heating and cooling) causes the duct to expand and contract, working loose joints over years. In older homes, previous renovation work disturbed the duct and joints were not resecured.

When the Vent Is Fine But the Dryer Is Still Slow

If you've confirmed the vent is clear and the cap opens fully with strong airflow, but the dryer is still slow, the problem is inside the appliance. Common appliance causes include: a failing heating element (electric) or gas burner igniter; a faulty thermostat that prevents the dryer from reaching operating temperature; a worn drive belt that allows the drum to slip rather than tumble consistently; or a clogged dryer cabinet interior (lint bypasses the trap over years of use and accumulates inside the cabinet around the heating element). Slow Dryer FAQ

"Seems OK" is subjective. Rent or borrow a handheld anemometer (under $20 on Amazon) and measure actual airflow at the cap. A properly operating 4-inch dryer vent should produce at least 25–40 feet per minute of air velocity at the cap opening. Below that, there's restriction. If the measurement is borderline, do a professional duct cleaning anyway — even partial restriction in a longer run creates performance problems before the cap airflow looks clearly weak to an observer.

A medium load of mixed clothing (not towels or heavy blankets) in a properly operating dryer with a clear vent should dry in 35–55 minutes at a medium-high heat setting. Towels and heavy items take 45–65 minutes. If you're consistently over 60 minutes for light loads or over 80 minutes for towels, investigate the vent. These baselines apply to standard-capacity residential dryers — compact or stackable units may have longer baseline times.
